A brief biography of Francesco Tomasinelli
I have always been fascinated by nature, especially by weird, neglected animals. I took my first nature photos in 2001, while studying for my Environmental Science degree at the University of Genova, Italy. In following years I began to work with various magazines as photographer and author, specializing in less known animals, like insects, arachnids, reptiles, amphibians and others from all over the world. My experience in breeding insects and arachnids in the lab actually proved very useful for obtaining special pictures. In 2003 I became secretary of Aracnofilia, Italian Arachnological Society. In 2005 I started travelling much more, and my archive growed very fast. Although I'm more specialized in science topics I work quite a lot as general photographer (mostly travel, some sports, events, commercial/still life and architecture). In recent years I started to work as nature&ecology consultant too and this is becoming increasingly important in my activity.
Many of my pictures are marketed by my photo agents, Natural Visions in the United Kingdom (science/nature images), Tips Images (general, travel, some nature) and The Lighthouse (science/nature images) in Italy , Photo Researchers in US (science/nature images) and, since 2002, appeared in various magazines, including Focus, GEO, Quark, Explora, Rivista della Natura, Parchi e Riserve Naturali, National Geographic Italia, BBC Wildlife, Airone, Oasis, Aqva, Piemonte Parchi, Reptilia, and others. Hundreds of my images (not only animals, of course) were featured in many other publications (BBC books, Mondadori, Zanichelli, De Agostini, Audobon Society, National Geographic, il Sole 24 Ore, Repubblica and many more...), in newspapers, cards and museum exhibits thanks to my agents. I also have had photo exhibitions and presentations on various nature subjects (Milan 2003 and 2004, Bergamo 2005 and 2009, Brescia 2005, Pisa 2006, Genova 2007 and 2009, Torino 2007).
Equipment
The images you see here are obtained with Nikon & Sigma equipment. Some of them are scanned Fuji slides, but in 2006 I started to use digital reflex cameras (DSLR) extensively and now I'm completely converted to digital photography.
