By Francesco Tomasinelli African tiger beetles are very special insects. They evolved huge, peculiar mandibles to hunt specific preys: armoured beetles and grasshoppers found in this habitat. Some of them, like the huge Manticora, more than 6 cm long, are the most impressive predatory beetles in the world. The smaller but faster Anthia, are more widespread and are among the most important insect predators in dry habitats. Manticora, sometimes nicknamed sabre tooth beetles, are rare insect and are now protected species in South Africa.
